All former Monmouth College quarterback Alex Tanney ever wanted was a chance and that's just what he got in the Tennessee Titan's finale Sunday at Indianapolis completing his NFL debut with an unheard of NFL quarterback efficiency rating of 114.9. Tanney completed his first seven passes and nearly guided the Titans to a second-half comeback before falling 30-24.
Tanney, who signed with the Titans just before Christmas and assigned jersey No. 11 the same number he wore at Monmouth during his record-setting career, entered the game in the third quarter after an injury forced starting QB Zach Mettenberger to the sidelines. Tanney took over with the Titans trailing 27-14 and moved the team downfield for a field goal, capping an 11-play drive to cut the margin to 27-17.
The Titans cut the margin to just three, at 27-24, when Tanney hooked up with Doreial Green-Beckham for a five-yard TD pass, Tanney's first touchdown pass in the NFL after throwing for an all-divisions NCAA record 157 while at Monmouth.
Tanney, who completed 10 of 14 throws for 99 yards and a TD, had one last chance to complete the storybook ending Sunday, but Tennessee couldn't maintain their final drive, turning the ball over on downs in the final two minutes.
It was Tanney's second stint with Tennessee this season after spending the entire preseason with the team and surviving the cuts until the team broke camp. Tennessee is getting to be a familiar season-ending stop for Tanney who last year was signed by the Titans for the final two games of the season.
